The
archipelago of the Azores lies in the North Atlantic, approximately
1.500 Km. west of Lisbon and comprises 9 islands, whose areas vary from
17Km2 (Corvo Island) to 747Km2 (S. Miguel Island). The archipelago is
spread over an area of about 2.333 Km2, forming three groups of islands:
the Eastern Group, comprising Santa Maria and São Miguel; the Central
Group, comprising Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial; and
the Western Group comprising Flores and Corvo.
